Memory of 2008 - The Brunei Times - Traditional dance is national heritage by Adilah Ishak

THE Raja Isteri Fatimah Primary School emerged as champion of the National Traditional Dance Competition for Primary Schools at the finals yesterday. In his speech as the guest of honour at the event, Hj Suhaila Hj Abdul Karim, the Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Education, said that Brunei Malay traditional dance is the nation's cultural heritage and as such children should be taught not only on the intricate and delicate movements of the dance, but they should also appreciate and be proud of them.

"Traditional dance need to be promoted, provided they do not run contrary with the Malay and Islamic social values practised in the country," he stressed.

He pointed out that the traditional dance, as part of the co-curriculum activity, could become an activity for children to enjoy school more.

"It's not merely an entertainment but also for children to enjoy the school's environment that is fun. Dancing can also contribute to children's emotional development by enabling them to appreciate the aesthetic values better," Hj Suhaila added.

First runner-up was Dato Othman Primary School while Kg Mata Mata Primary School was the second-runner up.

Twelve schools competed in the finals out of an initial 55.

Apart from preserving the country's traditional dances to be passed on to future generations, the competition was also aimed at upholding Brunei's identity as a country rich in cultural heritage and to produce educated young generation excelling in Brunei's art and culture.

A teacher from Kapok Primary School, Hjh Rosnah Hj Osman, told The Brunei Times that her pupils have been practising hard for the event. "The students practised the dance as part of their extra-curricular activities and also learnt the history of the dance," she said.

The competition took place at the Sayyidina Abu Bakar Secondary School in Lambak.

Memory of 2008 - Media Permata - SR Raja Isteri Fatimah raih juara tarian asli Oleh Hasrulraizan


BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Ahad - Sekolah Rendah (SR) Raja Isteri Fatimah (RIF) yang mempersembahkan tarian Jipin Laila Sembah menyingkirkan juara bertahan tiga tahun berturut-turut, SR Anggerek Desa untuk merangkul gelaran juara Pertandingan Tarian Brunei Asli Sekolah-Sekolah Rendah Senegara Kali Ke-32.

Sekolah dari Brunei I itu memperoleh markah 87.1 peratus bagi meninggalkan jauh pesaing terdekatnya termasuk naib johan, SR Dato Othman, Brunei II yang buat kali ketiga tahunnya berturut-turut menyandang tempat kedua, dengan markah 84.3 peratus dengan tarian mereka, Dundang-Dundang.

SR Kampung Mata-Mata, Gadong, Brunei III pula mencipta sejarahnya tersendiri apabila buat pertama kalinya menduduki tangga tiga teratas sejak pertandingan seumpamanya diadakan pada tahun 1994 apabila mengumpul 83.7 peratus melalui tarian Indung Anak untuk muncul selaku pemenang tempat ketiga.

Sembilan pasukan lain yang bertanding di peringkat akhir itu ialah SR Jerudong, SR Kapok, SR Sultan Hasan, Bangar, SR Sungai Siamas, SR Orang Kaya Besar Imas, Subok, SR Selangan, SR Pengiran Pekerma Setia DiRaja Sahibul Bandar, Gadong, SR Mulaut dan SR Anggerek Desa.

Merasmikan pertandingan dan menyampaikan hadiah kepada pemenang, cenderamata kepada hakim dan sijil kepada guru pembimbing yang mengikuti Bengkel Tarian Brunei Asli ialah Timbalan Setiausaha Tetap (Pengajian Tinggi) Kementerian Pendidikan, Haji Suhaila Haji Abdul Karim.

Menyerikan lagi suasana pertandingan, guru-guru pembimbing yang mengikuti Bengkel Tarian Brunei Asli mempersembahkan tarian Hola-Hela dan Medayut sebelum keputusan pertandingan diumumkan.

Memory of 2008 - Raja Isteri Fatimah Primary School Wins Traditional Dance Competition by Malek Hashim

Bandar Seri Begawan - The 32nd Brunei Traditional Dance Competition for government primary schools, organised by the Co-Curriculum Education Department under the Ministry of Education, was yesterday held at Sayyidina Abu Bakar Secondary School in Lambak Kanan.
Present as the guest of honour was Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Education Awang Haji Suhaila bin Haji Abdul Karim.

Fifty-one schools across the country participated in the competition, which was aimed at promoting traditional dances among the students. Raja Isteri Fatimah Primary School emerged as the champion this year with their winning performance, "Jipin Laila Sembah".

First and second runners-up were Dato Othman Primary School and Kg Mata Mata Primary School with "Dundang-Dundang" and "Indung Anak" performances respectively. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
